But as well as wishing Prince William and Kate Middleton well on a personal level (considering his childhood, he seems to have turned out remarkably normal, far more normal than most of my friends, and a gentleman to boot), the royal wedding news has cheered me up tremendously – for the simple reason that it’s going to drive Lefties mental.
It’s already started at the Guardian, with lots of carping about the cost of the wedding (which as an argument is a non-starter, since it will almost certainly boost the economy) and about the endless grovelling towards the aristocracy.
Over the next few months we’ll see the urban middle class (of which I am a member) doing what they love best – class hatred, both towards those above them and those below, whose patriotism they especially despise.
Because they’re going to be absolutely tortured with this royal business from now until the wedding day, like living next door to someone who plays ragga and UK garage at top volume 24 hours-a-day.
It’s not just financial envy, which many of us sympathise with, that angers them, but the ideas royalty represents – conservatism, the hereditary principle, religion, hierarchy and patriotism.
Well said!
